Parker Sampson drilled a game-winning field goal in the second overtime Saturday afternoon as Northwest knocked off Fort Hays State 36-33.

The Bearcats (9-1) trailed 17-0 in the second quarter before reeling off 19 unanswered points to take the lead into halftime.

Northwest's lone touchdown in the second half came on a shovel pass from Braden Wright to Justin Rankin. Rankin rumbled into the end zone from nine yards out. Fort Hays put up nine points in the second half points, all from the leg of Dante Brown, including a 56-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime. On the third play of the second overtime period, Mike Ehlke knocked the ball loose from Fort Hays wide receiver Harley Hazlett as he extended for a first down, then Ehlke scooped it up to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.

Northwest responded with a walk-off 38-yard field goal from Sampson.

Wright threw for 279 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, and ran for 96 yards and a score.

Imoni Donadelle finished the day with five receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

The win gives Northwest a boost as they look to make the playoffs for the 16th consecutive season. The Bearcats also have the chance to win a share of their 30th MIAA title Saturday when they host unbeaten Central Missouri.

Kickoff next Saturday, November 16, is set for 1:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 12:30pm.
